Calhoun Liberty Credit Union (CLCU) in Blountstown, Florida, is a financial institution whose philosophy lies at the intersection of community passion and financial services.
This dedication to the community’s well-being has garnered the admiration and recognition of CLCU’s peers, including the Credit Union National Association (CUNA). And, over the last three years, CLCU has earned multiple CUNA Awards for its relentless dedication to community service and financial education.
This year, CLCU won 1st place for the Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award among credit unions between $50 and 250 million in assets—for the second consecutive year. The Desjardins Award, named after credit union pioneer Alphonse Desjardins, celebrates leadership in both youth and adult financial literacy initiatives.
In 2021, CLCU was recognized with both the statewide and national Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Services Award in their asset category. Dora Maxwell, an unwavering community activist, was devoted to credit union development and serving the underserved. CLCU receiving this award means it truly exemplifies the spirit of community involvement.
CLCU grabbed two statewide CUNA Awards in 2022: the Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award and the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Award.
“People Helping People”
Patrick La Pine, CEO of the League of Southeastern Credit Unions & Affiliates, recognized CLCU’s extraordinary dedication to the community.
“CEO Thomas Flowers and the staff at Calhoun Liberty Credit Union are proof that the credit union philosophy of ‘people helping people’ is front and center in the Sunshine State,” he said.
Thomas said the CUNA Awards capture the spirit of what the credit union represents, and acknowledged that it would not be possible for CLCU to win them without the support of its members.
“These awards are not just trophies to us. They’re a reflection of the trust and support our members have in us, and that means everything,” said Thomas. “To win these awards means that our consistent efforts to uphold the credit union philosophy and serve our community have truly made a difference.”
Unwavering Community Devotion
CLCU’s commitment to the community is evident in its actions. When Hurricane Michael devastated the community five years ago, CLCU stayed open to help its members.
Their community-focused initiatives, such as donating backpacks and supplies to local students and running an annual scholarship program, further amplify their commitment. This year alone, the institution awarded an impressive $30,000 worth of scholarships, recognizing outstanding academic achievements and community involvement.
CLCU’s commitment to financial education shines through in its “Reality Fair,” which is a unique event that simulates real-life financial responsibilities, like renting a home or buying a car, to teach high school students about making solid financial decisions. This initiative to educate the community’s youth on financial matters paves the way for a brighter and more financially stable future for everyone.
With its series of awards and community contributions, CLCU stands as a great example of how financial institutions can make a profound impact on their communities. And, CLCU’s commitment to service, education, and community well-being will always remain a foundational principle.
